Aldi Recruitment Portal
UX Design
Overview
I created an insights-based recruitment website redesign to improve candidates’ experience and help Aldi recruit the best talent.
The problem
Aldi recruits thousands of people each year and their existing website made it difficult for people to understand and find the right role.
They wanted to create an improved application and job search experience for candidates looking for roles in their stores, head office, warehouse and apprenticeships.
The challenge
We needed to develop a mobile-first website where job search was simple, content was delivered consistently and candidates were managed in a responsible way.
My approach
I worked collaboratively with a third party design agency to deliver the new site. I was liaising with client teams, project management and our in-house development team to ensure it was delivered on time and to budget, and achieved the desired outcome for the users and the business.
Research
To truly improve the experience, I needed a deep understanding of different user needs, goals and pain points. I conducted my research in two phases:
Audience insights
I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the recruitment audience; their needs, the business requirements and positioning within the market.
I started this process by carrying out some initial desk research on trends and cultural reports of the industry and recruitment in general.
I then performed some competitor analysis to gauge where Aldi were currently performing within the market.
Testing and interviews
I moderated usability testing and customer interviews on the current site to uncover usability issues and understand each user types motivations and needs when searching and applying for a new job.
These sessions included:
- Card sorting exercise (to understand priorities)
- Cold job search
- Competitor job search
- Aldi job search
Discovery & design
The research findings played a crucial role in the project decision-making.
I worked collaboratively and I liaised between the client, their design agency and the development team, balancing user needs and business goals.
Discovery workshops
I ran a series of client workshops, where I used various discovery and ideation techniques to uncover business priorities and problems.
We broke this down into three area of discussion: content, functionality & design.
After uncovering all the requirements, I was ready to proceed with the design process.
Design
I started by using rapid ideation techniques and sketching draft ideas. This enabled me to explore different solutions to the problems.
Once I narrowed down those ideas, I created low fidelity wireframes, which I scaled up to a working Axure prototype.
We went through multiple rounds of crits, testing and feedback, before agreeing the final solution.
Before:
There was no obvious route into searching for a job, which we identified as the first action a user was likely to take. The navigation and interaction design was confusing and it left users feeling overwhelmed.
After:
I included social proof, as a way of sharing the benefits of working at Aldi, made searching for a job the primary call to action and simplified the navigation (in priority order), giving clear paths to the users.
Before:
In the previous experience, a user would select the area they’d like to work in to get to search, which would then direct them to the search page where they’d enter the location they were looking for. The search functionality was outdated and difficult to use.
After:
I simplified the search journey bringing it all into one page, added an option to use their current location, included clear prompts and displayed the results in the priority order of information highlighted within the usability sessions.
The results
We provided different navigation options, to either search specifically for a job or by navigating through the different departments.
Users found the information on the careers pages informative, easy to read and they enjoyed the simplicity.
Within the first month, we saw traffic from job search to vacancy filler increase by 19%.
